Let the sunshine in… but beat the harmful rays with some top-notch sunscreen so the only reason your grin (not grimace) is because your skin is protected!

Recently, at the beach, I thought I was doing everything right! Applying sunscreen 30 minutes before I went in the sun, reapplying every hour or so, sitting in the shade during the sun’s peaking hours… to no avail. I returned home with what I thought was heat rash, because how could it possibly be anything else when I had been so diligent about the application of sunscreen?

Applying sunscreen 30 minutes before I went in the sun- check!

Reapplying every hour or so- check!

Sitting in the shade during the sun’s peaking hours- check!

But to no avail. I returned home with what I thought was heat rash, because how could it possibly be anything else when I had been so diligent about the application of sunscreen? NOPE. Turns out I had something way worse- SUN POISONING.

But how you ask? The type of sunscreen I was using.

I asked my Dr. which kind of sunscreen he finds works best. He told me he only uses mineral-based sunscreen and that it should ALWAYS have the word zinc included in the listed ingredients. He suggested two lines for me to try: Badger, and The Honest Company’s “Honest Sunscreen.”

But wait! He warned me to be wary of non-mineral based sunscreens due to the increasing amount studies showing that the chemically produced UV blockers are causing hormone fluctuations and a relation with new skin sensitivities. The worst of which according to EWG is oxybenzone, which mimics estrogen production, alters sperm production and causes endometriosis in women. YIKES! Check the labels ladies & gents!

I don’t know about y’all but I am going mineral from here on out, ZINC ME UP!For other great mineral-based sunscreens to try EWG for ratings from 1-10.

BOTOX- When to Say When

When most people hear Botox they simultaneously think of the words “frozen, still, plastic…” you get the point. Let me reassure you, when properly injected NO ONE (unless you tell them or they have Botox too) will know you had anything done. I mean, if Botox is the most popular non-surgical cosmetic procedure on the market, there’s got to be more to it, right?

In an interview with Kiera Aaron from Shape Magazine, dermatologist Joshua Zeichner gives us the deets on why Botox jumped a whopping 18% from 2014 to 2015. Not only are more people getting injected; more YOUNG people are having the procedure done!

Preventative – don’t we all love that word? This is reason numero uno why people, females and males alike, are getting Botox at a younger age. Zeichner explains that over time collagen in the skin grows weak and doesn’t “bounce” back as we get older. Additionally, repeated facial expressions create folds in your skin which combined with this weak collagen means one thing – wrinkles. Botox combats these issues by freezing particular muscles in the face and thereby smoothing out and/or preventing deep lines from forming! Also, there isn’t any downtime, so you can go straight back to work or on that hot date you’ve been anticipating. Sounds like a miracle, right!?

Here’s the thing – “procedure” can be a scary word. However, Botox only last’s for 3-5 months! So if you don’t like it (which of course won’t happen), simply don’t get it again. Whether you’re in your 20’s and looking to prevent fine lines and wrinkles from forming, or in your 50’s looking to erase current lines and wrinkles – Botox is for you! So hey, why not give it a shot (pun intended)!

Dash says, “How cute is my client Katie?! She came in with mostly natural hair and wanted to be brightened up. She is a mom of and needed something low maintenance. I decided balayage was the best way to go because of its soft grow out. I used Loreal Infine Platine for her highlights and toned her with a sandy golden mix from Diarichesse. I also freshened up her cut by adding a few long layers.”

Dash gave her client quite the hair makeover (before on top, after on bottom) making her brighter and blonder. She says, “The beautiful Allie came in today and wanting to be brighter. She is a newscaster and needed something that will work well under studio lighting. I used Loreal Infine Platine with 25 vol for her highlights, and Majilift 600S as a lowlight, as well as a Marijel blend that is close to her natural color to break things up. Add in a fresh haircut, smooth blow dry, style and you have one hot blonde!
